Music industry research

Music industry research

In the 1700s the music industry came about when Mozart started to seek commercial opportunities to market his music and performances to the public. In the 1800s paper sheet music publishers dominated the music industry. In the early 20th century phonograph industry grew significantly in popularity and the dominance of the paper sheet music came to an end and was replaced by the record industry. In 1964 the cassette became mainstream allowing people to own music in a more compact way. In 1990 the mp3 is born allowing people to have music on there computers and transfer it. In 2003 napster and Itunes make it possible to download music legally.

Audience questionnaire analysis

Based on my audience research I have compiled up enough data to know what the average person wants and who and how I can market my product to the correct audience. This is based on the basic information about themselves and also the music taste of the people who have replied.
There was a almost an even split you replied from the 37 between boys and girls, 18 boys and 19 girls. The majority of replies were in the age range of 16-20.
All of the replies were from students.
The two most popular genres was pop and rock.
The two most important things to be seen in a music video was the lyrics being represented and a deep narrative.
The two most popular reasons of watching a music video came back as to be entertained and to relate to the artist.
The most important thing people expect to see in a 'pop punk' video is the band playing from different camera angles.
There was an almost even split between challenge and following conventions 20/17.
Most people would like to see a mix between the performance of the band and a narrative.
There was no specific theme for what people would like to see in a pop punk music video.
I was originally going to do the vamps for my music video but I have changed my mind since making the questionnaire making the next to questions invalid.
There was no specific theme in the response to any ideas for a music video.

All Signs Point To Lauderdale, brief overview of narrative (my video version)

All Signs Point To Lauderdale (narrative)

The protagonist (Liam) does not fit in very well in school and lacks friends. He has a crush on this girl but she see's him as weird and whenever he comes over she would just walk away from him. This is the case for most people, when he comes near they all seem to get up and leave. He is bullied and the school bully tends to push him over or wind him up. He hears about a party that the girl he fancies is hosting and decides if he goes he may have a shot with her. He turns up at the party and she reluctantly let's him in. After a while he decides to have a go in which she once again denies him and everyone at the party is laughing at him. In one last ditch to impress this girl he picks up a guitar and starts singing, everyone is shocked but after a few seconds they all start cheering. The girl comes over and kisses him and things start looking up for him.

Track selection

I have chosen the song All sings point to Lauderdale by A day to remember, I have chosen this song as it fits in with the pop-punk genre I have chosen to research. "All Signs Point to Lauderdale" is the second single from A Day to Remember's fourth album, What Separates Me from You, released on June 7, 2011. I have also chosen it as I believe I can use the lyrics and the conventions of the pop punk genre well to make a video

Reckless records (Record Label) rough cut

The logo for Reckless Records is in my opinion a simple yet effective logo. It is smashed glass with the name of the record label overlaid on it. I have named it this because I feel the name represents the genre of the video I am going to make as the pop punk genre can be seen as quite reckless. The text itself is meant to represent cracks as the glass is smashed and it fits well together. Due to the simple but yet effectiveness of this I will use this as my draft to improve if not use as my final logo.

Audience Research questionaire

Using Google Docs I have created a questionnaire in which I will send to as many people as possible for them to fill in, so I can gather as much detail as I can to match likes and dislikes to my target audience and thus being able to add want my target audience would like to see in to my video.

Fallout Boy's audience

Fallout Boy's audience

Fallout Boy are a pop punk band who also helped popularise the genre 'emo,' they consist of 4 members Pete Wentz is both the guitarist and the song writer and Patrick Stump who is the singer. Their target audience is mainly teenagers and young adults which is typical of the genre. The people who traditionally listen to Fallout Boy and other bands of this genre are usually people who do not conform to normality or the 'outcasts' or society, this is due to the lyrics of the songs and the style of the music. Their main audience gender is both female and males as there is no reason for them to appeal to specifically one gender, all of the age range of 13-21, these people tend to still be in school and like to be different. They tend to be this age as the pop punk genre was popular in the early 2000s when these age range was a child and grew up listening to this music.
The secondary audience is adults of the age of 22-30 as they were a bit older than the other age group but could still like listening to this sort of music. It would also appeal to anyone who likes faced paced music played with instruments with a pop genre style of voice.

Fallout Boy - Folie a deux, Digipak analysis

I am analysing the digipak from the album 'folie a deux' by the band Fallout Boy. The reason I am doing this one is because it fits in with the genre I am creating my music video and promo package on. The photo on the front cover is a long shot of a evil looking bear carrying a grissly bear on it's shoulders with the name of the band and album either side of it. The two bears could show the sign of expect the unexpected as it is unusual to see a bear carrying another bear on it's shoulders and definitely not something expected. The two bears are surrounded by a red and black background which fits in well the two bears as both the background and the bears look evil.
Inside we see the disk, on the disk we once again see the to evil looking bears, once again one on the shoulders of the other, the name of the band is above and to the left of it while the name of the album is to the left and below of the bears.
If you take out the disk out you see this strange object that I can only describe as looking like a hot air ballon made out of flesh with a light in it. I have no idea what it is, but once again goes with expect the unexpected as I would not expect to see that inside. Whatever it is follows the colour scheme of black and red which could suggest that it is evil which led me to believe that it could be a hot air ballon made from flesh.
On the back te typical colour scheme of red and black is continued and there is a a list of the songs going down vertically in the order they are on the disk. Underneath the songs is a picture of two skeletons wearing pirate hats having a sword fight. This entre digipak screams strange evil, with unexpected things being flung in to it.

Music video narrative analysis (All American Rejects - Gives You Hell)

Music video narrative analysis

The video is set up to have different scenes, these scenes are the events of the night and the day. The lyrics goes with what is happening on screen and the narrative of the video, we first see this when he sings ‘I wake up every evening, with a big smile on my face’ and the video shows him waking up in the evening and him sitting up smiling. We know it is the evening as it is dark, the alarm clock shows it and we see his neighbors saying goodnight to each other.

The next notable part is when the chorus comes in which says:
‘When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell’
This does not completely match up to what is being shown but it does to the narrative, in the video we see the band playing their instruments and this is still at night. Although nobody is ‘seeing his face’ or ‘walking his way’ the neighbors still have to go through ‘hell’ in not getting any sleep because of the noise they are making.

The next verse and scene shows the next day and the neighbors are cleaning the car, the neighbor is also singing some of this verse. The lyrics say:
‘Now where's your picket fence love
And where's that shiny car’
This shows that the neighbor is taunting him about how he has a much better life and better material goods.

The next chorus are the same lyrics:
‘When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell’
But this time it is still in the day and the neighbor is getting revenge on the sleeping man by turning his music up while he is washing his car, waking up the sleeping man and causing him to come out. When he does this the neighbor does some insulting gestures with a hose to basically say ‘two can play at that game.’

Each scene is the next part of the day where they are getting revenge on one another. The next scene is the night time and the neighbors are playing operation and the man is stood on a lawnmower out side being driven about while playing the guitar causing the man who is playing operation to constantly mess up and hit the sides causing the game to buzz. He does not like this and thinks he needs to get revenge. The lyrics for this verse are:
Tomorrow you'll be thinking to yourself
Where'd it all go wrong?
But the list goes on and on
This does not represent what is on the screen but does show that the ‘night’ man is now getting in some taunting of his own.

The next scene is once again the day time and the neighbor is looking for revenge by waking up the sleeping man for two days in a row. The chorus is now playing and the lyrics are still the same, showing the rivalry to between the two. The neighbor is setting up some mirrors outside to shine the light of the sun in to the bedroom of the sleeping man, once again waking him.

The next scene is the conclusion to the battle with the night man taking it to the next level. The lyrics are:
Now you'll never see
What you've done to me
You can take back your memories
They're no good to me
And here's all your lies

You can't look me in the eyes
With the sad, sad look
That you wear so well

When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you find a man that's worth a damn and treats you well
Then he's a fool you're just as well
Hope it gives you hell.
The first half of the lyrics are sang by the usual man but the second half which is the ‘next level’ I have mentioned is sang by many people using megaphones and speakers.

The final chorus comes on while the other neighbor storms out of his house in a complete outrage and has an argument about all the noise. The video ends with the two girlfriends/wives swapping houses and boys. They then live happily ever after.
