Shot count task (You me at six – Liquid confidence)

For my shot count task I decided to do You me at six’s Liquid confidence as they are in the pop-punk genre which is what I am doing for my coursework.

For this task I counted 96 different shots with the main edit used being a jump cut. I found this difficult at times because some of the editing used caused the shots to change over really quickly. There was a wide variety of shots in the video with the main one being either a close up of Josh’s (the singer) face or a long shot of the band playing their instruments.

Genre

The pop-punk genre is conventionally shown by using a fast paced shots, so through the use of editing, it is also shown by the mise en scene. However this song is not the most conventional as you are typically set in a party or in an open outside space or often both, instead it is set in a studio and only a studio. The colours used in the video are dark and dull which could be seen to reflect the song’s lyrics.

Narrative

From the music video there is very little to no narrative, it starts off with the band playing on a tv set and them proceeding to leave and walk through the corridor back to their room. They then proceed to enter a dark empty room and continue to play the song they were doing in the tv studio. This could possibly link into the lyrics as they say ‘You have nothing to lose’ which could be by being rebellious and walking out and doing their own thing.

Audience

You me at six’s audience consists of teenagers who can relate with the problems they sing about or who simply enjoy the sound of pop punk. This is due to the lyrics not only sung by them but in the genre as a whole is typically about problems, friends, fun and girls. The sound of Josh’s voice could be easily recognisable with the pop genre but the sound of the instruments and the pace of them is typical to punk rock. The attire of the band is typical to those who listen to the genre, skinny jeans and long hair (males).

Representation

Although all the band members are male they are not your stereotypical ‘men’ who enjoy playing sports and going to the gym, they are all relatively skinny and all have long hair; which is typical to find in the pop punk genre. However the genre is known for singing about having fun with friends and girls, although promoting to go against authority and being different.
